Man at War – Excerpt No. 266

“They weren’t caught unprepared,” Marc said.

“Sir?” Murphy and Ryan both said.

Marc pointed to the mounds of spent casings. A significant amount of ammunition was expended, with a pattern indicating the men were organised in a half circle. Exactly like we taught them.

Fifty-six paces away there was another pile, but this one still had a body. Marc turned back to face Aelred and whispered something. Neither of the men heard a thing, but the French officer melted into the darkness.

Black and white photograph of a young soldier in full military uniform and helmet lying on his back atop a vast, dense pile of thousands of spent shell casings that stretch into the background. His eyes are open, gazing upward, with a calm yet somber expression. The image has a vintage, distressed border and evokes the heavy toll of war.
