Out of an overabundance of caution, Marc unsheathed his sabre and cut the vampire’s head clean off. He then tossed the head away to ensure the body and head would never again be reunited. His throw was strong enough that no man saw where it landed.

“When we’re done clearing the scene,” Marc said. “I want the body burned and the bones crushed.”

“Sir,” Ryan said. “He hasn’t moved an inch.”

“Nor would I if I were him,” Marc said. “I’ve seen vampires reconnect their heads when given the chance.”

“That’s…” Murphy said.

“Exactly,” Marc replied. “That’s why I never take any chances.”

Black and white photograph of a man in a military-style coat and peaked cap standing with his back partially to the viewer. He holds aloft a severed human head (still wearing a soft cap) in his outstretched right hand, silhouetted against a dark, brooding sky. A distant lighthouse glows faintly on the horizon over a body of water.
