Man at War – Excerpt No. 354

Marc looked through a pair of binoculars at the abandoned farmhouse. While he could see perfectly in the dark, great distances remained a challenge.

Right beside him was Sawyer who had his rifle at the ready. Marc had to hand it to the hunters, this place was so isolated that he only picked up two, faint heartbeats.

“What are they up to?” Sawyer asked, in a whisper that only another vampire could hear.

“Changing,” Marc said.

“Can I look?” Sawyer asked.

A British officer and a soldier kneel on a ridge at night, the officer looking through binoculars at an abandoned farmhouse in the distance. Pale lantern light glows from one of the farmhouse windows. Cold, open countryside under a starry sky. Black-and-white period photograph.
