The Spy Who Loved Me – Excerpt No. 28

It was the one of the messes and by the looks of it the staff were caught by surprise. Several were dead at their tables, bleeding over the breakfast. Others were shot in the back as they went for the ready use locker in the far corner.

Smythe peeked inside, but the shell casings were almost exclusively located by the door. That meant he was dealing with professionals. No need to search the kitchen.

As he pulled back he heard the bang followed by the crack of a high velocity round passing by his head. He instinctively dropped to his knees, which looked like a controlled fall into the mess hall. Then again it pays to be certain.

A man in a dark suit crouches low beside a metal table in a grey concrete mess hall, one hand braced on the table, looking intently toward the open doorway. Bullet holes and blood spatter mark the walls. A bright muzzle flash is visible in the hallway beyond the door. The floor is dirty and scattered with debris. The image has a soft polaroid-style border.
