Man at War – Excerpt No. 19

“What—(was that?)” Murphy asked.

The Captain raised his hand to silence him and shook his head. In the space between heart beats, this gentleman was now less than a foot away.

“Not the place or time,” the Captain whispered. “Head back to your lines.”

Whoever gave him that initial warning must have gone. The one before him spoke exactly like an educated British officer. I’m not sure I’d like to meet the other man.

“You’re not going, Sir?” Murphy asked.

“Your… aggressor is not dead… I need to question him.”

a cinematic black and white photo of No Man's Land at night with thick fog rolling in during WWI, a German soldier standing in the midst of the desolate landscape, his head turned at an unnatural angle, as if his neck has been broken, his facial features frozen in a permanent grimace, his skin pale and clammy, his uniform tattered and worn, the fog swirling around him, shrouding the devastation and chaos of war, the photography style is dramatic and haunting, with deep shadows and muted tones, capturing the eerie and foreboding atmosphere of the battlefield.
