Man at War – Excerpt No. 198

“What is it, Private Lewis?” Murphy asked.

“Here,” Lewis said. “Take a look, Sir.”

Murphy looked inside the outstretched bag and recoiled almost immediately. Marc knew his second could not have seen the head on his way in.

“Sir,” Murphy said. “There’s the head of a woman in there.”

“We didn’t even touch it,” Lewis said. “Monaghan—Private Monaghan noticed her during our handover.”

a surreal and vibrant cinematic photo of a human soldier with a pale complexion and exhausted expression, wearing a worn and tattered 1915 military uniform, recoils in horror from looking at the contents of a burlap sac with dark red blood oozing from the bottom, set against the desolate and eerie backdrop of No Man's Land at night, with faint moonlight casting long shadows, capturing the scene in a photorealistic style with subtle film grain, blending realistic details with a dreamlike atmosphere, the soldier's eyes wide with fear and his face illuminated only by the faint light of the night sky.
