Man at War – Excerpt No. 259

“Are you up for this, old man?” Marc asked.

Aelred chuckled, and stood up. As though by instinct, they both pulled out their service weapons.

Marc also grabbed his sabre, seeing as he had never seen his second so spooked. We may as well be prepared.

“Where to?” Marc asked.

“About three miles out, north-west,” Murphy answered.

The position certainly helped clarify the situation.

Two British officers emerge from a stone and wooden bunker entrance set into a rocky, grassy hillside. The officer in front, wearing a peaked cap and service dress uniform, holds a rifle and looks forward with a serious expression. The second officer, in a darker uniform with a side cap, stands slightly behind him. Tall grass and reeds frame the scene in the foreground. The image is in dramatic black-and-white with a vintage aged photo border.
