Man at War – Excerpt No. 332

Just ahead Duff was working its way through the streets using the terrain for cover. Their objective was a ruined church, specifically the subterranean crypts beneath it. Marc was more than happy to have the ghouls evicted.

From his position he noted that not a single roof was intact. Many buildings were standing only because a couple brick walls were intact. This was the most horrific aspect of this war, how death and destruction had spread to the cities.

Despite the battle for this town ending months ago, there was still the subtle scent of burnt wood. In the distance he caught Private Morin moving along with his team. Judging solely from his soldiering, Marc would conclude the man was not compromised. If it were me, I’d let him run through a couple of missions normally to sell the deception.

Black and white photograph of a devastated war-torn town at night. A soldier in a long coat and cap stands in the foreground on the right, observing the destruction. Another soldier stands further down the rubble-strewn street amid piles of broken wood, debris, and smoldering fires. In the background, damaged buildings with collapsed roofs and chimneys are visible under a dark, smoky sky, with thick plumes of smoke rising and flames flickering throughout the scene. The image has a vintage, torn-edge photo border.
