  • A Biography of Background Characters

Evelyn’s novels are part of an interconnected universe. While some stories stand alone, recurring characters and places are mentioned to tap into the rich, cohesive tapestry of the series. This section lists characters who shaped the narrative through their influence on the main cast but are not always active participants.

These biographies provide backstory for new readers and serve as a refresher for those familiar with the series.

    Ada Grey

Portrait of Ada Grey from the Roaring Twenties.

Ada, the eldest Grey sister, stayed in the company town and married a young miner. When a cave-in claimed his life, she was left destitute and turned to prostitution to survive. Her gravestone claims she died a year later from a breech birth, but the truth is darker.

Drusilla, a vengeful vampire thwarted by Ada’s sister, Clara Grey, sought Ada out. Offering power and purpose, Drusilla turned Ada into a vampire. Over decades, she wove a web of lies, convincing Ada that her youngest sister, Clara, had stolen her valour to ruin her life. Consumed by resentment, Ada embraced her new existence, becoming Drusilla’s loyal disciple.

After Drusilla’s death in the Roaring Twenties, Ada vanished. She resurfaced when Clara, now an angel, returned to Earth. The vengeful Ada seized control of Drusilla’s empire, and channelled its resources into a relentless campaign of revenge against her sister. Their conflict culminated in a showdown at The Grand, leaving the storied hotel in ruins.

Clara, unable to kill her sister, waled away from the conflict, leaving Ada’s ultimate fate uncertain.

    Adrienne Smythe

    Picture of Adrienne Smythe.

Adrienne Smythe toiled as a waitress in a gritty, dive bar until she crossed paths with Joseph Black, the enigmatic leader of a biker gang. Their passionate, whirlwind romance soon led to a pregnancy, immersing her in the supernatural, surrounded by a fierce pack of werewolves.

As mother to William and stepmother to Julia, Adrienne seized a pivotal moment when Clara Grey, dubbed ‘the Harpy,’ murdered the pack’s alpha to seize power. With cunning guidance, manipulation, calculated coercion, and a penchant for violence, Adrienne elevated her son William to the role of alpha while orchestrating Julia’s exile from the pack.

Although humans are insignificant in the eyes of a werewolf, Adrienne boldly assumed the role of den mother, maintaining an unyielding grip over William and, through him, the entire pack. Driven by a burning desire for vengeance for her husband’s death, she set in motion a chain of events that culminated in her death.

    Drusilla

Picture of Drusilla during the Roman age.

Drusilla was born in Rome during Emperor Diocletian’s reign. As daughter of a prominent senator, her comfortable life collapsed when a slight against Hera sparked a mob’s wrath, forcing her to flee.

She was saved due to a runaway, Christian’s sacrifice, which led to a secret conversion. Drusilla joined the Tower, a group set on purging Rome of pagan gods and vampires. As a founder, she devoted herself to the cause but was overlooked for leadership in favour of the Reverend Mother Augustine. Jealousy and the discovery that the Tower’s mission rested on a lie broke her faith. She left the order.

Turning to darkness, Drusilla became a vampire, known for beauty and cruelty. Over centuries, she sought to destroy the Tower, seeing it as a barrier to dominating all lesser creatures. In the Roaring Twenties, she finally succeeded in isolating the Tower but was hunted down and killed by a hunter who died in the act.

    Edith Stone

    Picture of Edith Stone.

Despite the tragic loss of a close friend and fellow acolyte of the Tower, Edith Stone excelled in her studies, earned prestigious appointments, and became a senior member of Les Filles de Jeanne d’Arc.

During the Great War, Edith hunted alongside Clara, confronting a surge of ghouls spawned by the conflict’s mass casualties. In their first year as partners, they were lured into a trap set by the vampire Drusilla. Clara’s quick thinking saved them, but Edith faced the consequences. The Reverend Mother demoted her for the mission’s failure. Humiliated, Edith vanished entirely from the many eyes of the Tower.

By the Roaring Twenties, a disillusioned Edith resurfaced, aligning with a group of women resisting their government’s religious oppression. Her lover was brutally killed by Drusilla, days before Clara showed up to investigate the Tower’s isolation. Their reunion was cut short, leaving the state of their relationship unresolved. Soon after, Edith was captured and tortured by government forces. She escaped in a blaze of vengeance, leaving a trail of bodies that earned her a place in local lore.

Edith’s death remains shrouded in mystery. In an alternate reality, she slays Drusilla and ascends to heaven. Eighty years in the future Earth, Clara and Edith share one final encounter, where Edith chooses to make the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of humanity.

    Marie Grâce de Foix

Picture of Countess Marie Grâce de Foix.

Marie Grâce de Foix, better known as Grace, is a former French countess who escaped the Bastille during the French Revolution. In New France, under Evelyn’s guidance, she is turned into a vampire. Over time, Grace becomes Evelyn’s trusted agent, switching between roles as assassin, spy, or saviour as needed.

Once a countess of stature, Grace’s appearance, fixed at thirteen, clashes with a modern world’s view of teenagers. She leans into her youth, posing as a moody teen, and relies on a blood-bound couple acting as her parents to maintain her cover.
