In spite of the dim light filtering through the window, it felt as though Death was lurking about. His governess, Jeanne had a lingering cough for years, which sometimes brought up blood.

In the past month, her health has deteriorated. First came the night sweats, followed by fever and significant weight loss. While his father said it was nothing, Marc could tell there was something wrong.

“No,” Marc replied before adopting a wry grin. “It’s not like you to make it easy for me.”

Bertrand looked behind him and understood precisely where his student’s eyes had been focused. For a moment it appeared as though he was about to say something, but thought better of it. There were limits to what staff could get away with, even as trusted advisors.

“If you only knew…” Bertrand replied. “Well, I’ve had enough of swords.”

“Correct, Marc,” Bertrand said with a warm smile. “Had enough for today?”

After taking a beating like that Marc would normally be chomping at the bit to head back. This time the contents of his stomach soured and his sunburnt skin lost a shade or two of colour right before Bertrand’s eyes..

Behind Bertrand there was the main keep that connected three towers. His eyes focused on a particular window, nearest to him, but furthest from the courtyard and quarters for the count and countess.

In spite of the dim light filtering through the window, it felt as though Death was lurking about.

Grim reaper with a long cloak and a long implement at their side looking away from the camera. Appears to be in a dark bedroom with light filtering through a window.

“There are no rules in war,” Marc replied.

In actuality there were tons of rules in war. There was an entire section in the family library devoted to them.  The oddest of which being that muskets had to be of a certain length when fitted with a bayonet.

However, history was filled with scores of examples of an opponent breaking the rules to claim victory. The dead were in no position to raise a complaint with the crown. The victor will invariably claim the vanquished fought dishonourably

“Correct, Marc,” Bertrand said with a warm smile. “Had enough for today?”

Marc had observed some of his cousins in similar situations. They would cry foul and have the instructor removed for forgetting their place. However, Marc had grown fond of Bertrand, who gave him plenty of reasons to avoid his father of late.

As a precaution he looked around and noticed they were still alone in one of the isolated quarters of the keep. The cool spring breeze was soothing against his cheeks, even if his nose radiated with heat. That’s going to be tender for a few days

    “Quit that,” Marc ordered.

Marc hated anything that reminded him of his father. Everytime the title Lord was used, he would choke back the urge to wretch.

“There are no rules in war,” Marc replied.

    “What happened?” Marc asked.

He forced all the air from lungs through his nose. There was a brief cloud of pink droplets before him, which cleared out the blood and restored his ability to breathe.

“Your nose left an impression on my elbow,” Bertrand said with a grin.

“Better than your sword,” Marc said absentmindedly, until a stray thought wandered into the forefront of his brain. “Wait. That was an illegal move!”

“It was,” Bertrand replied. “What about it, my Lord?”

    “Say something,” Bertrand said.

There was a look of concern etched on his instructor’s face. Marc could not place the reason until he felt something hot and sticky drip off his chin. He looked down and spotted droplets of blood against his white shirt.

Without thinking he licked his lips tasting the iron within. And then wiped his nose using the sleeve of his shirt. The stinging sent a wave of pain through his body and heightened his senses. At least the bleeding had tapered off, meaning what happened could stay between the two of them.

Through blurred vision be focused on the soothing male voice. Every word was filled with concern, but he may as well have been speaking Greek, because his mind could not process what was going on.

A hand pressed against his shoulder, and his training kicked in. His head cleared and he snapped his head fast enough to surprise the man. When the three versions of his attacker coalesced into a single image Marc relaxed visibly. He recognised the man as his weapons trainer, Bertrand.

    “Say something,” Bertrand said.

Three copies of the same man looking roughly at the same place. Blurred and bathed in white light, to render them unrecognizable.

“Marc?” a man said, piercing the high pitched wail reverberating through his head.

His ass was sore and his right leg went out at an odd angle. While his right thigh was numb, he could wiggle his toes and managed to straighten out his legs.

Marc gave his head a shake in an attempt to clear out of cobwebs. When the ringing continued, he probed the inside of his ear canals as though expecting to find the bell. He clenched his jaw after realising that this ring would be him for a while yet.

“Merde,” Marc swore and was lucky that the Comte and Compress were nowhere to be seen.

Without thought, his right index finger transformed. The fingernail grew longer, darkened and hardened until it was a talon. He pressed it against the polymer, slicing through the material until the metal was exposed.

The work would be tedious and time consuming, but he wanted to leave a physical record behind. If anything it would help him remember who he had once been if the beast within took control. It’s fortunate there are plenty of blood bags left at the station’s hospital.

After the first letter was carved into the wall, Marc smiled. His cheeks creaked as the frost broke off, which was horrifying enough. However his smile was entirely unnatural, like staring into the face of a man teetering on the edge of insanity.

“Her name was Jeanne,” Marc said.

“Laid to rest in the family crypt centuries ago,” Marc said.

Although, that line was not entirely true. That statement applies perfectly well to the Compte and Comptess, it did not to his mother.

“I have not thought of her in years,” Marc said.

His mother had been his first lesson in the injustices of this world. Notably the cruelty that came with nobility, the affluent, or the elite. A snake by any other name is just as venomous
