The Spy Who Loved Eveline – Excerpt No. 63

Their old foes from the Cold War days were known as the Holy Russian Empire. When the world went to shit due to the rusty fog their government turned to religion. While a government could be blamed for borderline incompetence, a theocratic government simply needed to invoke the will of the gods when things went bad. Otherwise, they took full responsibility for things that went right.

Square vintage-framed view of fog-choked Moscow. Rust-orange haze wraps St. Basil’s onion domes; cracked cobbles and a dead tree fill the square. A long-coated figure walks toward the cathedral; another in a rebreather and marked coat stands at the right edge. Holy Russian Empire surface: theocracy under the same dead air.
