Julia made a circle using her index and thumb and moved the tip of her nose in and out several times.

“Fuck knows,” Julia said. “Part of me wants to say it had something to do with my not existing.”

“Huh?” Clara asked, trying to wrap her mind around that statement. “So there was no version of you there?”

“Yeah,” Julia said. “I could walk around, see, and hear what was going on.”

a gritty, high-contrast, cinematic photograph of a strong-jawed, modern brunette with piercing brown eyes, wearing a fitted, black leather jacket, faded blue jeans, and a vibrant, cherry-red backpack, walking down the worn, cobblestone main street of a small, rustic, coastal mining town during the early 1900s, surrounded by old, weathered buildings, worn wooden docks, and vintage, steam-powered machinery, while the townsfolk, clad in worn, earth-toned clothing, going about their daily business, seemingly oblivious to her presence, as if she's a ghost from the future, with the misty, grey-blue atmosphere of the coastal town softly illuminating the scene, and the only pops of color coming from the woman's bold, red backpack and the faint, golden glow of the old, gas lanterns that line the street.
