“You know what I remember of the Tower?” Clara asked.

“Meager rations.”

“Brutal training. Acolytes died or were driven mad while attempting to complete their courses.”

“The endless lies. Sold as their one truth.”

“When I was Maria’s age, I was nearly raped and killed by a vampire. I wasn’t even a hunter back then.”

“Fighting in the Great War.”

“Watching friends and acquaintances die or vanish.”

“I beat the odds and lasted longer than most. I never made it to forty.”
