  • Bread Crumbs – Excerpt No. 7

She checked for messages, several of which were from a panicked Gwen. She went over the call logs, the last of which was an outgoing call to the local police. She called the cops!

While low on power,  Julia replied to Gwen and wrote, “Found this phone where they were taken. The last call made was to the cops. DO NOT trust them. J”

  • Starting Point – Excerpt No. 7

“Where is Kaylee?” Julia asked at a near whisper.

Gwen looked up and held back her breath. Julia put on what she hoped would be a disarming smile, but suspected it would appear strained. I’m trying!

“You?” Gwen said with wide eyes.

“Did Kaylee make it home last night?” Julia asked.

    “Get away!” Gwen said.

“Why?” Julia countered. “I’m not the one who tried their hand at murder…”

  • The Voodoo You Do – Excerpt No. 7

Julia reached another junction point. The presence of city buses was her first clue that this one was a bigger settlement. She was tempted to secure a room for the night. However, Julia was motivated to get back out there at first light. How do I find the camp

“(Just) follow the hikers,” Julia said.

She followed the procession of brightly coloured backpacks and jackets. With the sun hanging low in the sky and shadows stretching out as far as the eyes could see, Julia spotted the camp. It resembled the last one she came across and wondered if variations of these existed throughout the network.

  • Monkshood – Excerpt No. 7

“…Madison!” Julia yelled as she sprung straight up.

The wind rustled through the leaves, but that detail did not help someone deep in the forest. Julia had no idea where she was. A pair of hands grabbed her shoulders and tried to push her back down.

“Shh,” Gwen said softly, “You need to rest.”

    “What—” Julia asked.

“You hurt yourself,” Gwen replied, “Amber is making herbal tea for the pain. We are going to clean and dress that wound.”

  • Loose Ends – Excerpt No. 7

The truck pulled away, and caught those blue eyes in the rear-view mirror. She swooned, those were the eyes of a man who wanted to be with her. I’ve fallen so hard for him and I still can’t see the ground from here

They had a routine, where Julia would leave early in the morning and meet him out back. They grabbed breakfast at the bakery. While neither particularly cared for the burnt coffee with the consistency of old motor oil, it was the company that mattered.

  • The Lady in White – Excerpt No. 7

“Don’t let your imagination run wild,” Julia whispered, while the growing sense of dread made it difficult to breathe. “Calm down.”

Words without conviction held no sway over her. Nevertheless, she pushed onwards. Fear was taunting her, but Julia needed to know what was happening. Julia recited a prayer for a meagre amount of comfort.

  • On the Road Again – Excerpt No. 7

She drip dried before getting dressed and re-entered the meat locker.  She stowed everything away into her backpack, until all that remained was the envelope in her hand. I feel less ready now than I ever did.

“How has this trip been good for me?” Julia asked as a tear formed from out of the corner of her eye.

  • Waypoint – Excerpt No. 7

Their journey would begin after sunset, fortunately the waning gibbous moon provided plenty of light. For Julia that was sufficient, but she needed to account for Michelle. We just need to

“Stop,” Julia said after sighting a monster flashlight. “That will fucks with night vision.”

    “Why…” Michelle said. “Right…”

“Follow my lead,” Julia said. “Stay close, and we’ll be fine.”

“What if—” Michelle said. “What if he shows up?”

    “He won’t,” Julia lied.

  • On Dreams and Nightmares – Excerpt No. 7

Julia reached the base of the mountain, relieved the echoes were behind her. Covered in grime and sweat, Julia washed off in a spring. The once pristine waters were muddled by the time she stepped out. My hair hurts from the wash!

While clean, the deep woods negated the opportunity to dry off in the sun. Julia made a fire to warm up and her clothes dried. Meanwhile, she focused on warm thoughts while droplets of water rolled down her forehead.

“Worth it,” Julia said through chattering teeth.

  • Many a Yesterday – Excerpt No. 7

“Does this ever end?” Julia asked. “This sure as fuck isn’t the stairway to heaven.”

A glance confirmed she was deep within mist. Being surrounded by ethereal clouds disconnected her mind from reality.

It reminded her of driving through fog. Trapped in a flowing tapestry of white, while going over uncertain terrain. The difference being there was also the distinct possibility of fucking up and ending up in freefall…

    “Great,” Julia said.
