Julia waited for her eyes to adjust. At first, there was nothing more than an elongated silhouette, one shimmering with the radiating heat. Eventually, the definition and colour gained fidelity, until she made out the well-dressed woman standing beside a black car with tinted windows.

Julia’s eyes went wide and glassy, distracted by the sight of her reflection. She expected to see a brunette, with deep brown eyes, barely-perceptible breasts and a gaunt face. Those were the details prominently featured on the mugshot stapled onto the cover of her medical file. A shot where every rib was visible through her tight t-shirt she wore on the night of her arrest.

“Ever considered that you believe you belong here?” Julia repeated under her breath.
The prison Doctor asked her earlier in the day. Until that question reached her submerged consciousness, Julia had been running on autopilot. A state of mind where she went through the required motions but provided no cognitive input. It was the only weapon she had of keeping on the straight and narrow, to avoid finding herself in the hole.

Time moved at a crawl for Julia, appearing as though every grain of sand fell through the hour glass in torturous slow motion. As judged by her cellmate’s steady breathing, it was at least an hour since lights out, but in her mind a week could have just as easily passed. While her bones were weary, and she was emotionally drained, her mind refused to disengage and that was not about to change.

“Sorry,” Julia said softly while grabbing a couple of appetisers. “I should show respect for my hostess.”
Evelyn giggled, before grabbing something which she swallowed whole. With a warm smile she winked, a sign that it would take more than that slight to get under her skin. Watch it, they are masters of deception.
“I wasn’t expecting you to be so polite,” Evelyn said. “See, we are both beholden to our stereotypes.”

Tired and out of breath, she dropped to her knees to drink some water. That’s when she saw the reflection of a girl with blood smeared over her cheek. Through those big brown eyes, she spotted the monster within, the one with a dark heart that light had no hopes of ever reaching. In that moment she cried, unsure if she would ever find her place in this world.
