He remembered talking until the candle burned out. By then the tavern had gone quiet. They didn’t realise they were being loud until a neighbour knocked against the wall. They carried on in whispers, like children keeping secrets from their parents.

It turned out that she, like Chabanel, was from Normandy. France seceded that land to the conquering Norse… that goes far to explain her appearance.
