The Van Helsing Conjecture – Excerpt No. 153

She was about to smile as those memories from her youth resurfaced, but the strong scent wafted her way. Far stronger than was expected of a miner getting off after finishing his shift.

“This is all wrong,” Clara whispered.

“What was that?” Jack said, his smile fading as he tensed his jaw.

“A girl I met in church,” Clara said after realising she could not avoid the mention of Evelyn. “She said that her father was looking at investing in the mine.”

It was a guess but a plausible explanation for her uttering the name. He wouldn’t believe the truth either way
