The Van Helsing Conjecture – Excerpt No. 57

“Evelyn…” Clara said.

“Fuck! Hit it right out of the park,” Julia responded. “I was going to string you along…”

“Sorry to disappoint.”

“I can’t believe you shacked up with that corpse,” Julia began. “Still, she’s clearly into you.”

Clara put the phone down on the table and closed her eyes. Whatever Evelyn said to Julia must have been more than a quick nudge to call.

“She’s wonderful,” Clara said while trying her best to keep her breathing and heart rate under control.

“She is,” Julia began. “When I met her in that restaurant with all that food, she treated me with respect. Like I was a person deserving of it and not someone beaten down… like a stray… dog…”

Clara’s eyes began to fill with water. In that moment she could see past the monster and see the woman of worth within.

Photo-realistic image of two women eating at an Indian restaurant. One is 18, French descent, green eyes and black hair, and wears a high-fashion dress that suits her perfectly. The other is 22, Irish descent, brown eyes and hair, less confident, and wears a simple dress. Table is overloaded with food items, and women sit opposing the other nibbling on individual dishes.
