Julia woke up in a start, like a cat interrupted during their twelfth nap of the day. She was immediately on all fours, back straight up and claws digging into the floor. She was ready to pounce, to attack, or did until she noticed that Amber was still in the corner cowering in fear, and remembered what the dream was about. No wonder I felt like I deserved to rot away in prison…

If there was one constant in the universe, it was that werewolves did not faint. They might get knocked out, or succumb to their wounds, but they most certainly did not fall over like some melodramatic Victorian lady suffering from the vapours. Go me… that’s got to be one for the record books.

Fallen Angels is the second book in the Behind Blue Eyes series, written by independent author Anna Mocikat. This story begins with the premise that someone is killing members of the Guardian Angels, an elite band of cyborg soldiers.
This noir cyberpunk story kicks off roughly a year after the events of the first book. Anna Mocikat again introduces us to the Archangel Nephilim, who has been reset to factory settings.
Now the compliant and efficient killing machine that the High Archangel expects, doors open for her. This gives us a glimpse of the political players that influence this utopian society. We watch as relationships blossom, while memories of the gap year come pouring in as bits and pieces.
This book is loaded with action, intrigue, foreshadowing, and of course sex, which will not disappoint fans. I found this quick read difficult to put down. Fortunately, there are plenty of natural pauses in the book.
As with Behind Blue Eyes, there are multiple elements at play, and Olympias’ enemies have not been idle. How some of these parts come into play has yet to play out, and for you just need to pick up a copy of War Games.
This place had the feel of a slaughterhouse, there were pools of blood everywhere and signs of splatter throughout, all brought on by arterial spray or blunt force trauma. Admittedly, shaking a man while biting into his chest cavity did a wonderful job of painting the twelve-foot ceilings red.

She built up speed and slammed head first into the door. While the impact left a serious dent, this door was not going anywhere. Julia howled with rage, meanwhile activity increased markedly on the other side. She figured they were scrambling for cover, or making a run for it. Either way, she would be the one putting her paw on the cosmic balance tonight.

She sniffed and pushed through the door. As her head cleared the door a large red extinguisher smashed into her skull, deformed and ruptured. The gamble failed, the cloud quickly dissipated, and she caught sight of the frost-covered idiot. He looked at what was left of the extinguisher, and then at the enraged werewolf, cringed, and backed away.

“You made a call before you were captured,” the girl replied. “They tracked down the signal, and sent me to find you.”
“A girl?” Julia asked, cringing after realising that such a question could put her in danger.
It was fortunate that this corpse did not take the question personally. Julia had heard stories of child-like vampires who were centuries old, and were very touchy about being treated like a child.

Released from her infernal bindings left Julia free to move. However, she had been in that position for so long that she could barely hold herself in place.
“Here, let me help?” The girl asked.
“No,” Julia hissed, cognisant that this girl was speaking in a hushed tone for a reason.
Alas, Julia simply slid off the slab and curled up into a ball onto the floor.

“Are you here for me?” Julia asked, and in that moment would have happily surrendered to Death.
“No,” Eleanor said in reply after snapping her fingers to presumably prevent any interruption.
“Oh,” Julia said disappointed, as tears continued to stream down her burning cheeks.
“I was here for another,” Eleanor said, “They were not ready to move on…”

The excruciating pain, compounded by her inability to breathe would soon lead her to pass out. In an effort to delay the inevitable, she focused on remaining calm, cool, and collected. However, that was like asking a mouse to stay still when trapped between the jaws of a cat.
