“Get staff on it,” Max said.

    “Can’t,” Cecil countered.

    “Why—” Max asked.

“One is dead,” Cecil said flatly. “The other was possessed, and had to lock her up in the dungeon.”

The Grand featured more than spas, pools, and restaurants. There were dark altars for every matter of faith, cells to keep people on ice, and dungeons that would make torturers from the Dark Ages feel right at home. For Cecil to send a witch there meant that she was beyond saving.

“Got it,” Max said. “I’ll get the staff mobilised.”

“Thanks,” Cecil replied in that dead voice. “Watch your back.”

“We have a problem,” Cecil said.

“Hi, Max,” he said. “How are things?”

Cecil was the man who cleaned up messes at The Grand. He lurked in the shadows, and rarely showed his face unless there was a serious concern. This was the Boss’ fix it man that made everyone uneasy including Max.

“Very funny,” Cecil said. “The dead are rising.”

That kind of statement was not as helpful as it sounded. Vampires were essentially undead, hence most of their guests had a tomb or headstone with their names on it. This hotel catered to plenty of things they classified as dead, some of which no one had a name for.

“Can you be more specific?” Max asked.

“Walls are bleeding in three bedrooms, power flickering in and out all over, cold spots, shrieks and lamenting,” Cecil said. “It’s all over the hotel, so it can’t just be one powerful spirit.”

This one had no visible marks of trauma. However, those glassy eyes were still open, and the head moved freely. He had been doing this job long enough to know what happened.

“He was a registered guest,” Max said.

    “Sir?” the head chef asked.

“She’s at it again,” Max said.

He was referring to a child-like vampire that often vacationed at The Grand during the summer months. This centuries old vampire had a hair trigger when it came to being called child or adorable. Every year these extra bodies would crop up, courtesy of her tantrums.

There were fifteen bodies laying on the floor of the meat locker. Many had been exsanguinated, but a few had been killed by other means. One particularly nasty guest liked to play with her food, treating them like cats did mice. Room service had their work cut out for them with Lady Bast, short for Bastet, the Egyptian goddess of old.

Since they were shut down after the stock market crashed in the late nineteen-twenties, they had to get creative with their supply of people. They were lucky that humans could always be counted upon to set aside their morals for monetary compensation.

“These are all the kills for today?” Max asked.

Max, short of Maximus, was olive skinned, brown-eyed, and dark haired man that embodied traits from Roman statues left over from the Antiquities. His Latin accent was ever-present and entirely authentic, at least for any child born in the city of Romulus and Remus.

What he lacked in height he made up in attitude and bravado. Max had been concierge at The Grand for over a century now, looking after guests and their exacting needs. It was a dirty job, but someone had to do it, besides he was richly rewarded.

“Any tips on double-sided tape?” Clara asked.

“Get your dress on first,” Evelyn said. “You don’t want it sticking to the wrong parts of the dress. Although there’s a roll of normal tape in there if you want to appear more perky.”

“When an eyeful isn’t enough,” Clara said.

“Not when creating a distraction,” Evelyn added.

“Okay,” Clara said as she got up. “Walk me through this.”

Avec plaisir, ma chère,” Evelyn said.

“Have you made your final video?” Evelyn asked.

“Not yet,” Clara said. “I’m a little underdressed for the role.”

“Really?” Evelyn challenged. “Coming from an angel who fought a werewolf naked?”

“I wasn’t making a speech at the time,” Clara said and smirked.

“True,” Evelyn said. “Good thing I had them pack a long coat for you.”

    “You did?” Clara asked.

“You’ll be turning heads in that outfit,” Evelyn said. “Best you don’t get caught in a selfie or two before reaching the gate.”

    “Nothing unexpected,” Clara said.

“Really?” Evelyn asked. “Check your hat box.”

Clara got off her chair and caught Evelyn’s wolf whistle when she bent over to grab the box. The weight was about what she would expect out of a felt cloche hat.

“I think I’ve died and gone to heaven,” Evelyn teased.

“A gal like you would be bored senseless up there,” Clara said. Heck, I was bored.

    “How true,” Evelyn said.

“I’m hurt,” Evelyn said before pouting. “I just wanted to watch.”

“If that were true,” Clara countered. “You would have just tapped into the camera feeds. This place is so heavily bugged that you’d need to go down to the studs to find them all.”

There was a pause, so Clara made use of the opportunity to look through her pieces. Many of the pieces appeared to be, since they needed to be convincing, but were clever fakes. Her pearl earrings were clip-on and could be crushed to extract holy water. Serve a vampire a drink laced with this stuff and watch them smoke.

As a human she used to bathe in holy water. Any hunter worth their salt knew how to make their own, and bathing in it shielded them against the impure. As a fallen angel, Clara had no such concerns. My blood is like acid to one of them.

“You’re right,” Evelyn said. “We’ve used that suit when we needed leverage over someone.”

“A minute of fun, followed by a lifetime of regret?” Clara confirmed.

Oui, exactly,” Evelyn replied. “Information is power.”

It was obvious that Evelyn knew how to sew, there was a room befitting a master tailor in their current home. This dress was low cut to the centre of her back, and cut in a V at the front from stopped above her belly button. The sides were open entirely, so the dress was held up by two straps. Clara would be entirely on display.

“The old tricks are sometimes the best tricks,” Clara said.

She stripped to nothing, and put on more appropriate underwear. It matched in colour and the fabrics would not work against one another. There would be no bra, but amongst her things she found a roll of two-sided tape. It did not take much for her to realise what it would be used for. The things a gal has to do for beauty.
