Julia counted fourteen dead. She tore into the throat of a man writhing in pain, silencing him entirely… That makes fifteen.
There were pools of blood everywhere and splatter throughout. While most of the spray came from slashing or blunt force trauma, shaking her head while biting into a chest cavity managed to paint the twelve-foot ceilings red.

She built up speed and slammed head first into the door. The impact left a serious dent, but the door did not budge. Julia howled with rage, and several scurried about on the other side. Little pig, little pig won’t you let me come in?
Julia scanned the area while laughing like a hyena. On her left, there was a security room window. She slashed at the wall beside the frame, the cinder block crumbled under her attacks and created an opening.

The Scorched Sky is a superhero fantasy novel written by independent author Jon Ford. This is the first book in the Femme Fatales series, featuring a tear in the sky, a massive alien ship and a big city to destroy.
As the genre implies, this story revolves around superheros who volunteer to help against an alien invasion. Some are ageless, some artificial, while others can’t vote or legally buy beer. This ragtag group of heroes sells this story. It adds depth to the characters through rich backstories brought out through their interactions with one another or as they come to terms with their situations.
This extensive cast of characters are thrown together into an extinction-level event, forcing them to learn, work together, and form bonds. Scientists and commanders on the field are just as much in the dark as to the aliens and their intentions. The unknown lends an air of reality to this work.
Does some of this sound like a movie? The Scorched Sky is a quick read that plays out a bit like a summer blockbuster. It offers plenty of action, dramatic scenes, and two post credit scenes. Which elements of these teasers will be in the next book? We have to wait to find out!
For those of you familiar with other works from the Twitter Writing Community, you’ll also be rewarded with a few Easter Eggs.
She sniffed and pushed through the doorway. As her head cleared the frame, a large red extinguisher smashed into her skull. The vessel deformed and ruptured from the impact. The gamble failed, and the cloud dissipated. Julia caught sight of the frost-covered idiot. He looked over what was left of the extinguisher, and then at the enraged werewolf. Out of options, the man cringed, and backed away.

War Games is the third book in the Behind Blue Eyes series written by independent author Anna Mocikat. A noir cyberpunk novel about a cyborg femme fatale, who is part of an elite fighting unit.
This book continues directly after the events of Fallen Angels and answers the question readers from the second book have been waiting for: Why did you kill me?
True to the series, the book presents plenty of action, steamy sex scenes, and light gore. Mocikat brings political elements to the foreground, readers will get a glimpse at the rot behind the shine to this utopian society.
This quick read is sure to please fans of the series. While Mocikat answered many burning questions, some linger, providing ample opportunity to entice readers to dive into Last Stand, tentatively scheduled for a fall 2022 release!
In that moment, Julia would have happily surrendered to Death. An end to all this pain and humiliation…
“No,” Eleanor replied.
Eleanor snapped her fingers. Presumably to freeze the world and prevent any interruptions. I can’t even tell if this cell is frozen.
“Oh,” Julia said, while tears rolled down her burning cheeks.
“I was here for another,” Eleanor said, “They were… unwilling to move on…”

Eye of the Brave is the third book in the Rift Cycle series written by independent author Halo Scot. This post-apocalyptic fantasy starts off seven years after the events of Echoes of Blood.
Like the preceding books, Eye of the Brave focuses on Rune and Kyer, with alternating chapters covering their perspectives. By now, readers are familiar with the rich world and characters that Zawad offers.
This is where Scot dives into the unknown, introducing us to the realm of Digard, home of the patron gods. This is a world alien to our own and eternal, which leaves certain characters wholly unprepared for the experience.
Throughout the first part of the book, there is a lingering sense that we are approaching the bitter end. The fires cool, the spirit weakens, their strength wanes and affairs are settled.
That changed in tone, causing us to wonder if Scot has rewarded us with a fairy tale ending. Of course, we should know better by now.
Eye of the Brave is a fast read that further delves into the dark portrait the author painted for us. With a rich assortment of characters and tragic backstories, Scot sets the stage perfectly for the last book in the series, Elegy of the Void.
No matter, Julia took a deep breath and forced that air through her mouth. Her cheeks bulged before her lips were forced apart, sending a spray of blood towards her target.
“Bitch got blood in my eyes!” Chef yelled.
Before Julia could gloat, there came three pinches in quick succession on her calf, courtesy of an autoinjector. I hate that fucking thing!

Julia smirked. They used that word in an attempt to degrade her, but there was comfort in embracing the werewolf within. She was in fact a bitch, and with every passing day they risked learning first hand what that entailed. We’ll see who’s my bitch then…

Julia sat by a crackling fire at the heart of these woods. She leaned against her backpack for support while the sun surrendered the sky to the dominion of the moon. In spite of being isolated from all she knew, Julia had never felt more at ease.
That changed when the silvery light of the moon crept over these lands and shone upon her face. For years the moon had whispered to her in a language she did not understand. Tonight, her very soul understood she was being summoned.
