I was out at a cabin when one of my guests brought in some scallops. Since I had some mushrooms, onions and garlic, I combined the ingredients to create this dish. This recipe is quick and easy to make and requires only one pan. Necessity really is the mother of invention!

This is one of my favourite side dishes that uses an outdoor grill. The #Corn is wrapped in foil to stay warm while guests eat their meals (or return for seconds). This recipe prepares one, simply repeat for each ear of corn.
I was playing around with my camera, intent on creating a featured image for another post. However, when I looked at the finished product it got me thinking. I know! Rather dangerous for an author!
During a flash of creative inspiration, the world I see is both pristine and clear. I could spend weeks writing that scene in all of its exquisite detail. How is that a problem? Like a lightning strike at night, details vanish as soon as they appear.
When looking at the shot, it sets the scene for someone collecting items and ingredients needed to bake a cake. In the picture there are ingredients, a tablet displaying the recipe, candles for later and even some serving plates.
However, once the flash is gone the minds rendition is no longer vibrant. In this case, the richness of reds have bled out from the shot. There is also a lack of detail and the image is cropped in such a way to prevent viewers from getting a sense of the bigger picture.
Like any story there are also inconsistencies or plot holes. How could someone make a cake without eggs, butter or vanilla extract? Why is a candle lit even though the cake is not ready?
Only after extensive reviews, reader input and hard work will author’s rendition approximate the original flash of inspiration. The reds will be more vibrant, the scene will sport a delicious cake that will make readers drool.
To think you can just taste that thick icing and marble cake… Wait? It was Maple Syrup cake originally!
Oh well minor detail. Hope no one will notice!
A modern speakeasy at clip-joint prices in Halifax! While there are modern amenities in the room like computers and an air conditioner, the owners have gone through a lot of effort to make it seem like the Real McCoy. Patrons are required to casually embed a password into normal conversation and then are discretely whisked away through the bowels of the building to this hidden gem.
Of course, there are differences which are generational. You will not find an iconic sliding peephole window, a phonograph, a tube radio or even a dance floor. The latter is probably the biggest omission, but many people are going to dance to the Charleston?
When you enter the space, music from the Roaring Twenties and Dirty Thirties can be heard in the background. It gives the space an authentic feel, however on occasion Moby or modern music is mixed in. Fortunately, the music is all environmental so the transition was not jarring.
Overall I would highly recommend the experience, even for non-drinkers. Their deserts and appetizers are to die for!
As an homage to the era, the images have been formatted to resemble shots taken from a box camera. I did opt to maintain the colour however, seems to create a better ambiance.

I was making sure that all of my storefront links to the Portrait were valid, when I noticed that my novel had reached 150 downloads on Smashwords. Well it is 151 because I was rather late in noticing the milestone.
My decision to target Smashwords seems to have been a good one. Here are some reasons why:
While this is an achievement (albeit a minor one), I did not feel it was worth the effort or calorie intake to make a full-sized frosted cake. I will save that type of indulgence for later!
